How to Inspect a Used Car Before Buying in Pakistan

By Admin User · 10 June 2026 · 2 min read

Buying a used car without a proper inspection is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes buyers make in Pakistan. A thorough inspection takes 30–60 minutes but can save you hundreds of thousands of rupees in unexpected repairs.

Before You Arrive: Document Check

Ask the seller to share photos of the registration book before you visit. Verify:

  • The chassis number (VIN) on the book matches what you can see on the actual car
  • The engine number matches
  • The registered owner matches the person selling to you
  • There is no bank lien or loan registered on the vehicle

Exterior Inspection

Walk around the car in daylight. Look for:

  • Paint inconsistencies: Ripples or different textures indicate panel repair after an accident
  • Panel gaps: Uneven gaps indicate structural damage
  • Rust: Check under the car, around wheel arches, and the boot floor
  • Tyre condition: Uneven wear can indicate alignment or suspension problems

Under the Bonnet

  • Check for oil leaks — dark staining around the engine
  • Inspect coolant colour — should be bright green or orange, not brown
  • Look for mismatched parts or signs of rushed repair work

Test Drive Checklist

  • Does it pull to one side? (suspension or alignment issue)
  • Any vibration through the steering wheel at speed?
  • Does the gear change smoothly?
  • Any grinding or squealing from the brakes?

When to Get a Professional Inspection

For any car over PKR 15 lakh, hiring a qualified mechanic is strongly recommended. Cost is typically PKR 3,000–8,000 — money very well spent.
