Pakistan Fuel Prices 2025: How Every Hike Affects Car Buyers & Owners

By Admin User · 10 June 2026 · 2 min read

Fuel prices in Pakistan have more than doubled since 2021, fundamentally changing how Pakistanis think about buying, running, and choosing their vehicles. Understanding the fuel price dynamics is now as important as evaluating a car's engine specs.

Current Fuel Prices in Pakistan (2025)

  • Petrol RON-92: PKR 280–310 per litre
  • Hi-Octane RON-95/97: PKR 320–350 per litre
  • Diesel (HSD): PKR 280–300 per litre
  • CNG (Type 2, Compressed Natural Gas): where available, PKR 170–220 per kg

Pakistan's Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) revises prices every two weeks based on the international crude price and the PKR/USD exchange rate. Even a USD 5/barrel change in Brent crude, combined with rupee movement, can swing prices by PKR 10–20 per litre in a single revision.

How Fuel Prices Changed Vehicle Buying Decisions

The impact on car buying in Pakistan has been dramatic and lasting:

  • Demand for 660cc kei cars (Wagon R, Alto, Mira) has surged — they return 15–22 km/litre in city driving
  • Hybrid vehicles (Aqua, Prius, Vezel) have seen price premiums rise as buyers compete for fuel-efficient options
  • Large-displacement SUVs and V6 sedans have seen slower sales and faster depreciation
  • Electric vehicles are receiving more serious consideration than ever before

Impact on Commercial Vehicle Operators

For taxi drivers, ride-hailing partners (Careem, inDriver, Bykea), and truck operators, fuel now represents 50–60% of operational expenses. This has driven:

  • A shift to CNG where infrastructure is available (primarily Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad)
  • Higher per-km ride fares across all platforms
  • Demand for more fuel-efficient commercial vehicles (smaller trucks, CNG-equipped rickshaws)

The Hybrid Advantage at Today's Prices

At PKR 295/litre for petrol, the maths are compelling for hybrids. A Toyota Aqua hybrid returning 22 km/litre saves roughly:

  • PKR 150,000–250,000 in fuel per year vs a standard Corolla (14 km/litre)
  • For a driver covering 2,500 km/month, the premium for a used Aqua vs equivalent non-hybrid pays back in under 2 years

What to Expect Going Forward

Pakistan's fuel price trajectory depends on three factors: international crude prices, the PKR/USD rate, and the level of government subsidy. All three are unpredictable, but the structural trend (weaker rupee, reduced subsidies post-IMF programme) suggests fuel prices are unlikely to fall significantly in real terms.

For buyers deciding between vehicle options today, fuel economy should be weighted heavily in the total cost of ownership calculation. A car returning 5 km/litre more than an alternative will save PKR 150,000–250,000 over five years at current fuel prices — often enough to justify a higher purchase price.
